TTI Algeciras has formally submitted its Phase B expansion project for Isla Verde Exterior to the Port Authority. The initiative involves extending the terminal southwards, occupying an additional 160,000 square meters at Isla Verde Exterior, which will be added to the current 300,000 square meters.
TTI Algeciras plans to invest €150 million in the expansion, enabling the terminal to increase its handling capacity by half a million TEUs, reaching 2.1 million TEUs by 2028, with an additional 700,000 TEUs in a potential second phase.
This investment will also be accompanied by an extension of the current concession period through to 2065, reinforcing the company’s long-term strategic commitment to the Port of Algeciras.
TTI Algeciras is a strategic terminal for its main shareholders: South Korean shipping company HMM (holding 50% plus one share) and, since February 2021, the CMA CGM Group (holding 50% minus one share). Each week, the terminal handles some of the world's largest container ships, including the HMM Algeciras (23,964 TEU) and CMA CGM's 23,000 TEU LNG-powered vessels, such as the CMA CGM Jacques Saadé.
"This expansion is the natural evolution of over a decade of sustained growth and operational and commercial excellence," stated Alonso Luque, CEO of TTI Algeciras. "The project will not only provide the additional physical capacity the terminal requires but also allow us to respond to new service opportunities and accommodate larger vessels, while maintaining the flexibility and efficiency that have always defined us."
Gerardo Landaluce, President of the APBA, emphasized: "TTI Algeciras has played a pivotal role in the international positioning of the port. Its common-user model, open to multiple shipping lines and alliances, has helped to consolidate Algeciras as a global logistics hub and a strategic tool for developing import and export flows for Andalusia and Spain. This expansion fully aligns with our roadmap to develop sustainable, resilient, and high-capacity maritime infrastructures in the Strait of Gibraltar area."
The first vessel called at TTI Algeciras on May 5, 2010, marking the launch of the first semi-automated terminal in the Mediterranean and Southern Europe. Since then, the facility has handled close to 18 million TEUs.
