The Port of Algeciras returned cargo throughput figures of 26.6 million tonnes for the first quarter of 2024 – a 3.30% growth due mainly to a boost in Liquid Bulks that returned 7.5 million tonnes of crude unloaded and refined fuels loaded at our port (up 14%). Container Throughput also helped the cargo volume, returning 1.17 million TEUs (up 4.6%) that were handled at the two terminals.  Despite the growth, these figures are still 10% down on the best return for a first quarter at the Port of Algeciras. Both terminals have served 900 containerships between them, fifty of them being megaships.

STATISTICS

After a month of March tempered by storms, the supply of bunkers to ships grew – although somewhat less – and returned figures of 869,236 tonnes (up 10.50%). Maritime traffic in the Straits of Gibraltar was affected by the continuous train of storm depressions that hit the Spanish mainland.  The Tarifa-Tangiers Ville line was particularly affected. Nevertheless, the quarter ended with 969,025 passengers (up 12%), 209,956 cars (up 18%) and 135,615 HGVs (up 6.9%) using our sea-links.
